Ventura Botanical Garden – Ventura
April 12 – 13, 2025
Tomatomania with a view!
Don’t know that we’ve ever been able to say that, but it’s a REALLY good view.
The Ventura Botanical Garden experts, volunteers and supporters have been taming and planting up the hills and hillsides above the courthouse in Ventura for over 15 years. It’s a 107-acre site!
With over 120,000 plants in the ground, the Gardens represent the five Mediterranean climate zones of the world; Chile, the Cape of South Africa, Australia, the Mediterranean Basin and California. These low water climate zones, like Ventura, allow for long-term sustainability and are designed to replicate plant communities as they occur in nature. Hiking trails and paths wind around and through sturdy plantings that represent these regions and thrive in this locale.
The garden suffered great losses during the Thomas Fire of 2017 but they are building back and building back better. The team there is very excited to host Tomatomania for the first time and introduce members, friends and supporters to some amazing and productive tomatoes.
Did you know that it’s believed the first tomato ever found was a small yellow cherry on a hillside in Peru? Yep, in a Mediterranean climactic zone. A good percentage of the varieties we’ll feature will perform in sunny but breezy conditions if you too live and garden near the beach. *When you visit, grab our COASTAL GROWING tip sheet. We want you to be a successful beachside tomato farmer!
Joe and his crew look forward to saying hello. Come for some TOMATO PLANTS but stay a while and explore! Or plan to do that in the future when you have an opportunity. It’s a great place to hike, learn about native and Mediterranean flora or just enjoy some quiet time.
But then those amazing views!
