Tomato Of The Year – THORBURN’S TERRA COTTA

THORBURN’S TERRA COTTA is TOMATOMANIA’S TOMATO OF THE YEAR for 2020!!

There it is, we couldn’t wait any longer. And it was hard to keep this to ourselves because this tomato is EVERYTHING, which is exactly what we all want in a Tomato of the Year, trust me.
A full color picture of this beauty was featured in the seed catalog of a Mr. James Thorburn of New York, circa 1893. While I’m sure it delighted many, it probably fell out of vogue as red tomatoes became the order of the day. It eventually could be found in the collection of the famous food historian and author Dr. William Woys Weaver and that’s how it made its way back into the heirloom seed market.
We included it in our events first in 2017 but it truly has been under the radar since. But we were in love from the first time we trialed it.
It’s been described as having Incredible flavor, color and history! With honey-brown skin, orange-pink flesh, and green seed mass, this is an eye-catching slicer with an out-of-this-world flavor.”
We agree completely. It’s a beefsteak shape that’s not as large as most of its class and it has been incredibly productive in our test gardens. Most of all, we love that it doesn’t test our patience in terms of ripening.,  It’s EARLY for a larger tomato so while we know it works in many different areas it should be a good find for coastal gardeners.
Thrilling color, great taste, solid production. In short, it’s tomato heaven.
We’re so excited to feature this tomato all season and hope you’ll enjoy it in your gardens for years to come.
